On June 27, 2023, EPN submitted comments on EPA’s proposed interim decision and draft risk assessment addendum for ethylene oxide (EtO). EtO is a flammable, colorless gas with many industrial uses, primarily in the making of other chemicals, and is used as a sterilant of medical devices and equipment and dried herbs, spices, and vegetables. The continued use of EtO poses a particular set of challenges for EPA, given the chemical’s cancer hazard assessment and risk to human health, while being a critical component to these industries. EPN made comments on each of the actions EPA is proposing to take to mitigate risks from EtO exposure.
