On December 14, 2021, EPN submitted comments on EPA’s Draft Policy Assessment (PA) for the Particulate Matter (PM) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). This draft document was prepared as a part of the current reconsideration of the 2020 final decision on the NAAQS for PM. The PA is intended to “bridge the gap” between the scientific and technical information assessed in the 2019 Integrated Science Assessment and its Supplement for PM. While EPN commended EPA on identifying key studies and updating risk and other analysis, it disagreed with the provisional conclusion to retain the daily standard for PM and believes EPA should consider a more stringent 24-hour PM standard that prevents high risk to sensitive populations.
