Katia Pilar Carranza is a Community Outreach Associate with our pro bono capacity-building technical assistance program. Katia concentrates on creating new and deeper connections between underserved communities in EPA Region 9, alumni with decades of expertise, and other allies (including the CCEEJ Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center) to assist with community-identified projects.

For over ten years, Katia has collaborated with diverse communities to advance their social and environmental priorities, from the local to the international level. Recently, Katia served as a Conservation and Justice Fellow for the Indigenous Kinship Circle and American Bird Conservancy, and she worked to advance an equitable engagement strategy for Indigenous people throughout North America while leading the development of a community-driven strategy. She also co-founded Together for Nature in her hometown to prepare underserved and frontline communities and youth to lead in sustainability and nature-based solutions. Katia is currently a graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. There, she conducted research assessing the impact of grazing practices on grassland resilience and biodiversity, and she also collaborated with Indigenous leaders to advance a study centering the social-ecological relationships, resilience, and priorities of Indigenous people in the Northern Great Plains.

Katia loves being in nature and community, and in her free time, you can find her hiking, caring for plants, community organizing, or attending cultural shows.
