EPA Proposal Would Gut Greenhouse Gas Reporting, Putting Polluters over People

WASHINGTON D.C. Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a proposed rule to gut EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program.

EPA was directed to establish the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program in legislation signed into law in 2007 by President George W Bush. The program requires reporting of greenhouse gas data from large sources of emissions and fuel suppliers, and EPA makes the data publicly available.

Joseph Goffman, former Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation at EPA who now volunteers his expertise with Environmental Protection Network, made the following statement on Zeldin’s attempt to cut back greenhouse gas reporting:

“President Trump promised Americans would have the cleanest air on earth, but once again, Trump’s EPA is taking actions that move us further from that goal.”

“Cutting the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program blinds Americans to the facts about climate pollution. Without it, policymakers, businesses, and communities cannot make sound decisions about how to cut emissions and protect public health.”

“By hiding this information from the public, Administrator Zeldin is denying Americans the ability to see the damaging results of his actions on climate pollution, air quality, and public health.”

“It’s a further addition to the deliberate blockade against future action on climate change—and yet another example of the administration putting polluters before people’s health.”

This is part of Zeldin’s polluters-first agenda to roll back 31 public health safeguards, which will:

  • Lead to nearly 200,000 premature deaths through 2050.
  • Cause more than 10,000 asthma attacks every day among children throughout the U.S., forcing kids to miss school, parents to miss work days, and families to make more trips to the school nurse or emergency room.
  • Create six dollars in costs to the public for every dollar in relief to corporate polluters, shifting the burden of pollution onto families through higher medical bills, lost wages from missed work, and more school sick days.
