EPA Continues Filling Top Roles with Chemical and Oil Industry Insiders,
Escalating Concerns of Health Harms to Americans
“EPA is filling up with lobbyists and executives from Big Oil and chemical industries. These industry insiders have fought to weaken the very protections EPA is supposed to enforce.”
Washington D.C. – Michelle Roos, Environmental Protection Network executive director, made the following statement today about the Senate’s consideration of the nominations of Douglas Troutman, a former chemical industry lobbyist, as Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), the EPA office responsible for regulating pesticides and industrial chemicals, and Jeffrey Hall, whose former law firm worked with industry to dismantle EPA protections, as EPA’s chief of enforcement.
“The Environmental Protection Agency is supposed to use data and science to protect Americans from threats to our health and safety—but instead of scientists, health experts, and environmental professionals, EPA is filling up with lobbyists and lawyers from the Big Oil and chemical industries. These industry insiders have fought to weaken the very protections EPA is supposed to enforce.
When the people responsible for safeguarding our air and water are the same people who have profited from rolling back safeguards, Americans suffer the consequences: more toxic pollution, more cancer, more liver disease, more learning problems in children, more sick babies.
It is fair for Americans to wonder: Will these officials be looking out for our health and safety, or for the profits of their former employers?”
