Temporary Funding Extension Isn’t Enough: Congress Must Finalize Full-Year EPA Budget that Restores Public Health Protections
This short-term patch won’t undo the damage from Zeldin’s ongoing efforts to shut down EPA’s ability to protect Americans’ health and safety.
Washington, D.C. — The Environmental Protection Network (EPN) today urged Congress to move quickly toward a full-year FY26 appropriations deal that restores the Environmental Protection Agency’s capacity to protect public health, after lawmakers voted to end the 40-day shutdown with a temporary funding extension.
“Reopening the government is a relief, but this short-term patch won’t undo the damage from Administrator Zeldin’s ongoing efforts to shut down EPA’s ability to protect Americans’ health and safety,” said Marc Boom, Senior Director at EPN. “The real test is whether Congress can agree on full-year funding. The Senate’s bipartisan plan would begin to rebuild EPA’s capacity to protect families and communities, while the House proposal would simply rubber-stamp Zeldin’s dangerous push to dismantle the agency.”
