EPN Sends Letter to EPA on Asbestos and TCEP Evaluations

On Wednesday, January 24, 2024, the Environmental Protection Network sent a letter to EPA Deputy Administrator Janet McCabe and Assistant Administrator, Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Michal Freedhoff about EPA’s peer review practices as they relate to the Toxic Substances Control Act Asbestos Part 2 and the Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) risk evaluations. We are pleased with the progress made in developing the risk evaluation for Asbestos Part 2. Still, we are concerned that corners are being cut as there are no plans for peer review of the full draft risk evaluation by the Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals. We recommend that EPA reexamine its peer review mechanisms for Asbestos Part 2 and TCEP and convene full SACC panel peer review processes for both evaluations.
