On May 16, 2026, the Environmental Protection Network sent a letter to Congress urging lawmakers to reject the President’s FY2027 budget request for EPA and provide at least $12 billion in annual funding and, at a minimum, no less than FY2025 enacted levels. EPN warned that the proposed $4.203 billion budget would cut EPA by 52% from FY2026 enacted levels, repeating the same approach Congress rejected last year and further weakening the agency’s ability to protect public health and the environment.
The letter highlights the risks of deep cuts to state and Tribal implementation grants, drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, Superfund cleanup, enforcement, independent science, and staffing. EPN also calls for appropriations language to restore EPA’s science capacity, preserve Title 42 scientific hiring authority, protect enforcement, keep Energy Star at EPA, support overburdened communities, and require regular public reporting so appropriated funds are used as Congress intended.
