EPN In Action July-August 2020

Welcome to your EPN in Action Newsletter

The Environmental Protection Network was launched in January 2017 to harness the expertise of former EPA career staff and confirmation-level appointees from multiple administrations to provide an informed and rigorous defense against efforts to undermine the protection of public health and the environment.

  • EPN released “Resetting the Course of EPA” outlining specific and actionable steps that EPA leadership can take to reset the course of the agency to address the most significant and pervasive threats to public health and our environment. In addition to 17 detailed papers focused on immediate, early, and long-term recommendations, EPN also released a summary report accompanied by a letter of support signed by six former EPA administrators from both Republican and Democratic administrations. “Resetting the Course of EPA” and the administrator’s letter were featured in an Associated Press article that was picked up by over 200 other publications across the country, as well as Politico’s Morning Energy podcast, Axios, and others.

  • EPN submitted comments on EPA’s proposal, “Increasing Consistency and Transparency in Considering Benefits and Costs in the Clean Air Act Rulemaking Process,” which specifies how cost-benefit analyses must be prepared for every significant new rule under the Clean Air Act (CAA). EPN members also presented testimony on the proposed rulemaking during a virtual public hearing.

  • EPN, in collaboration with other environmental non-profit organizations, submitted comments on EPA’s proposal to retain the existing National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for particulate matter (PM) rather than tighten it as recommended by EPA’s own scientists.
